Inspiring Juniors Q&A: Nikki Christou

Meet UK Inspiring Juniors 2018 winner Nikki Christou, from London.

1. How did you first get into technology?

Well, I got into technology around the age of 8, when I was diagnosed with my condition. I was left feeling isolated and lonely as I had become quite sick and could no longer take part in the hobbies I loved, for example ballet, football etc. So, one day I decided to film a video of me, on my iPad painting my nails and with my parents consent, I posted it.

Ever since then, my love for technology and filming videos has grown immensely. If it wasn’t for technology I'm not sure where I’d be right now.

2. Tell us about your project.

I use technology to raise awareness about my condition and to be the voice for anyone with struggles in there life, low confidence or medical illness to turn to and know that they are not alone. Life is really tough sometimes, but you just can’t give up, you just can’t! Beauty lies with in and that's the message that I try to prevail in every video of mine.

3. What do you love about technology?

I love the way that you can meet people and learn about their story’s, experiences, but also struggles and hardships they have gone through in life. After all everyone goes through rough patches in life and talking to someone who feels similarly to you, who ever that maybe is SO useful and takes away some of that loneliness. I have received so many messages from my amazing viewers who share their story with me and I feel so privileged. It can be that safe place for people all over the world to turn to day or night. Whether that be a 5 minute video or a 30 minute video to get their mind of of thing. Without technology I couldn’t do that and it’s incredible. It has grown my confidence hugely.

4. Who inspires you?

Many people inspire me but, my parents inspire me more than anyone. Their ability to find good and keep going in every situation is something that I find so admirable. Even when life is tough for them, whether that be because of my health or otherwise, they persevere and never seem to grow weak or look at life with a negative outlook, they are just remarkably brave, strong, positive, the list goes on, and they inspire me so very very much.

5. What is your ultimate dream for the future?

My dream for the future is to continue raising awareness for those who are struggling or don’t feel they have a voice. Also to educate as many people as possible to not judge a book by it’s cover and get to know someone before making assumptions by the way they look. But most of all spread the message that kindness always wins and if everyone was kind the world would be a very different place.
